GMOs vs Organic Farming: The Lines are blurring.. PART ONE


28th of March 2007, and the Quebec's Liberal Party HQ wakes up to discover five tonnes of corn piled high on their doorstep. Left by Greenpeace activist this gesture was left in protest at the unlabelled GM products that are being sneaked into Canadian supermarkets. 

Canada is one of the biggest producers of GMO products and the use of these products is on the increase around the world. The US leads the GMO revolution as the number 1 producing country and has approved 25 crops for farming.
Resistance is less common here and in November 2012, the Monsanto Co. a major producer of GM products in California won a vote to prevent labels from displaying how their GM foods were produced. It appears that GM food is here to stay.

Outside of the US, the use of GM crops continues to meet strong resistance from the public especially in Europe.Many view GM as an uncalculable risk; no one knows the impact that these crops will have upon the eco-systems in the long term or what long term consumption will have upon our health. Diversification is key to reducing risk in farming, therefore planting one super crop could herald hidden dangers as it may be exposed to adverse circumstances that we cannot foresee.

In the UK the introduction of GM has been met with heavy protest. The potential risks of GM products on ecological systems has proven a risk too heavy to take. Recent public opinion continues to show strong resistance to GM farming.

In Organic farming in the UK the use of GM animal feed is strictly forbidden. However the US does not feel the same way and an organically reared animal can consume GMO's. I want to explore whether these two arch rivals can be brought together to produce a happy wholesome produce.
